t is Basilicata’s heavily populated city: its urban area has 111,508 inhabitants. The location at 819 above sea level makes Potenza the highest chief town of a Region in Italy.
The downtown area of the city is piazza Matteotti, with the Municipality facing the square, with via Pretoria running through it. It is a lively thriving downtown area that opens up in the central piazza Mario Pagano, known by the locals as Piazza Prefettura since the nineteenth-century prefecture building is located there, today head office of the Prefect and provincial offices. The famous Teatro Stabile is also located in this square. In the lower part of the hill where the city rises there are various residential areas, working-class neighbourhoods and industrial areas.
